The previous year was favorable for Romania’s tourism industry, recording a significant increase in the number of foreign visitors. According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), accommodation units (hotels and guesthouses) attracted 1.95 million tourists from other countries, a 24% increase compared to 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foreign tourists’ spending also grew considerably, by 22%, reaching a total of approximately 5.2 billion lei (equivalent to 1 billion euros). The average expenditure per tourist was 2,674 lei (545 euros).<\/span><\/p>\n

Reasons for visits were split almost equally between leisure and business: 50.6% of tourists came for relaxation, and 49.4% for professional reasons. However, spending generated by business trips was higher, representing 55.2% of the total expenditures of foreign tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of foreign tourists preferred to organize their stay independently (39%), while 37% used a travel agency. Other travel arrangements were chosen by 13.4% of tourists, and 9.6% opted for a combination of individual organization and an agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

The primary means of transport used to reach Romania was the airplane (76%), followed by private cars (16.7%), coaches and buses (5.5%), river vessels (0.8%), trains (0.4%), and other means of transport (0.7%).<\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth quarter of 2023 saw 437,000 foreign tourists, with total expenditures of 1.31 billion lei (an average of 3,009.7 lei per tourist).<\/span><\/p>\n

The INS analysis is based on data collected from hotels that hosted more than 400 foreign tourists in the previous year and guesthouses that hosted more than 50 foreign tourists during the same interval.<\/span><\/p>\n
