Corporate and balneary tourism support the off-season.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]

The Romanian seaside registered a difficult summer season, marked by a decrease in the occupancy rate and a drastic decline in the number of foreign tourists, according to the analysis of Iuliana Tasie, general manager at Ana Hotels Europa in Eforie Nord. In this context, hotel operators are strategically reorienting towards corporate and balneary tourism to compensate for the pronounced seasonality and maintain business sustainability, given that a large-scale hotel requires an average annual occupancy rate of over 50% to be profitable.

Iuliana Tasie, with 25 years of experience in tourism, describes the recent season as following the trend of recent years, characterized by a “loss of identity” for the Romanian seaside. Factors contributing to this situation include the general economic context, tourists’ appetite for external destinations, and poor promotion of the local specifics. The occupancy rate at the Ana Hotels Europa hotel reached 70% with difficulty in July and August, a significant decrease compared to previous years when values of 85-90% were recorded. In contrast, in the off-season (June, September, October), the occupancy rate exceeds 70%, supported by corporate events—conferences and congresses for over 700 people—and by health tourism. However, the annual average occupancy rate stands between 30% and 35%, below the 50% profitability threshold.

A major problem is the collapse of the foreign tourist segment, whose share has dropped from circa 30% before the pandemic to under 10% currently, a decline influenced by the pandemic, the regional conflict, and a lack of promotion. The manager emphasizes that the seaside is not promoted as the country’s largest balneary resort, an asset that could attract more guest categories and combat seasonality. A global post-pandemic trend is observed, however: an increased interest from young clients (30-40 years old) in hotels with treatment bases and relaxation therapies.

To remain competitive, the 221-room Ana Hotels Europa completed a full renovation in the winter of 2023-2024, the first in 21 years. The unit features conference halls, a spa center with 36 treatment rooms, and 1,600 sqm of saltwater pools. Human resource management remains the biggest challenge, with the hotel operating with approximately 180 employees during the summer and retaining between 100 and 120 in the off-season to maintain service quality.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] The Romanian seaside registered a difficult summer season, marked by a decrease in the occupancy rate and a drastic decline in the number of foreign tourists, according to the analysis of Iuliana Tasie, general manager at Ana Hotels Europa in Eforie Nord.
