Brands reviews Pizza Hut sale due to poor performance

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]American group Yum! Brands, one of the world’s largest restaurant operators, has announced that it is exploring strategic alternatives for the Pizza Hut brand, including a possible sale. The decision comes against the backdrop of the pizza chain’s underperformance, in contrast to the solid growth of its other major brands, KFC and Taco Bell, a trend that has echoes in the Romanian market, where the local franchisee recently closed several units.

Globally, Pizza Hut sales fell 2% in the quarter ended Sept. 30, while Taco Bell’s sales rose 9% and KFC’s 6%. The discrepancy was even more pronounced in the US market, where Pizza Hut’s decline was 7%. Against this backdrop, KFC and Taco Bell together generate more than 80% of Yum! Brands. Chris Turner, the company’s CEO, said that while efforts have been made to turn the business around, “the performance indicates the need for additional measures that could be better implemented outside of Yum! Brands.” The group has hired financial advisers Goldman Sachs and Barclays to assist in the review process, noting that there is no set timeline and that a deal is not guaranteed.

Market analysts, such as Babson College’s Ab Igram, believe Pizza Hut faces structural challenges, being perceived as a dine-in restaurant in a market dominated by delivery-focused competitors such as Domino’s. A separation from Yum! Brands would allow new leadership, possibly a private equity firm, to devote capital and attention exclusively to turning the brand around. In an attempt to adapt, Pizza Hut is testing new restaurant concepts with self-service kiosks, “Hut ‘N Go” drive-thru lines for quick orders and visible prep stations.

In the Romanian market, the brand is operated under master-franchise by American Restaurant System, part of the Sphera Franchise Group. Although the company’s turnover increased from €12.41m in 2014 to €22.66m in 2023, Sphera Group closed 13 Pizza Hut restaurants by the end of 2023 and early 2024. Restructuring moves also took place in the UK, where the closure of 68 restaurants was initially announced, but Yum! Brands directly took over 64 locations, saving over 1,200 jobs.

Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 in Kansas with a loan of 600 USD (about 522 EUR at today’s exchange rate). The brand was acquired by PepsiCo in 1977 and then spun off in 1997, along with KFC and Taco Bell, to form the company that in 2002 became Yum! Brands.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]American group Yum!
