Over the past 10 years, tourism in Romania has almost doubled from 8 million visitors in 2013 to 14.6 million in 2024, according to INS data. The more than 80% growth was mainly driven by Romanian tourists, who generated almost 90% of the advance. <\/p>\n
The center of the country leads the way – the Centru Region (Brasov, Sibiu, Alba, Harghita, Covasna, Mures, Sibiu, Alba, Harghita, Covasna, Mures) remained the main tourist destination, with 3.3 million visitors in 2024, double the number of a decade ago, and a stable share of about 25% of the total. <\/p>\n
Seaside and Capital on the podium – The South-East (dominated by the Seaside) climbed to second place, with 2.3 million tourists, ahead of Bucharest-Ilfov (2.2 million). Together, they attract a third of the market, the same as in 2013. <\/p>\n
Strong regional growth – the North-West approached 2 million visitors (double compared to 2013), and the North-East reached 1.5 million. South-Muntenia passed 1.2 million, and South-West Oltenia recorded the highest growth (+120%), exceeding for the first time the 1 million tourist threshold.<\/p>\n
In terms of foreign tourism, the increase was smaller (+40%), with the capital city accounting for half of the growth, Transylvania for a quarter and the coast stagnated. <\/p>\n
