The aim: to put the county back on the national and international tourism map, through the eyes of those who can make it possible.

During five intense days, more than 40 travel agents traveled a complex route through Maramureș. The program was designed to offer a complete experience: from traditions and gastronomy to spectacular landscapes and heritage sites. The itinerary included iconic stops: the Vaser Valley Mocănița, the Merry Cemetery of Săpânța, the Church of Budești, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Sighet, but also lesser-known discoveries.

The aim of the infotrip was to rebuild a genuine connection between the destination and those who promote it. As ANAT vice-president Diana Iluț emphasized, sometimes it takes the eyes of a visitor to remind locals how valuable their place is.

At the center of the discussions was the need for coherence and pragmatism in the development of tourism in Maramure, a vision shared by all those involved. Gabriel Zetea, President of the County Council, spoke about the importance of a pragmatic vision in tourism, whereby investments and promotion efforts are transformed into direct benefits for the inhabitants.

This approach was also supported by Gabriel Bogdan Ștețco, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy, who emphasized the uniqueness of the region and the huge potential of Maramureș’ living traditions, while promising institutional support for such initiatives.

In his opinion, genuine tourism needs more than promotion. It needs legislative support, infrastructure and a unified strategy at national level, with local authorities as active partners.

The same pragmatic openness was also found in the speech of the county prefect, Florian-Valeriu Sălăjeanu, who spoke honestly about the challenges facing the county: lack of infrastructure, cleanliness problems, accessibility, but also attitudes that need to change among those working in tourism.

With personal experience in the field, he pointed out that “there is always an exchange of energy between those who come to us and those who host them,” and that this exchange needs to be cultivated, enhanced and supported with realistic public policies.

In addition, the difficulty of maintaining and promoting valuable local symbols, such as the Vaser Valley Mocănița, was discussed. This is in danger because of new standards imposed by the Ministry of Transport. Local authorities have called for such attractions to be recognized as heritage exceptions and properly supported. They attract tens of thousands of tourists each year, mainly from abroad, and represent an important source of income for Romanian truism.

Carried out in partnership between ANAT and the Maramureș County Council, the project culminated with a press conference organized in Baia Mare on April 6th.
