Approximately 50 mayors from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the twin city of Chernivtsi in Ukraine and specialists in attracting and implementing European projects and investments met in Iasi to take part in the Forum of Twin Cities.
\nAccording to the organizers, the Forum aims to support collaboration between twinned cities and offer new opportunities for institutional partnership between the cities on both sides of the Prut, particularly in attracting European funds.
\n“Thanks to its strategic position, Iasi has been exporting stability and prosperity for years.
\nIasi has benefited enormously from Romania’s accession to the European Union.
\nAs evidence in support of this assertion, it is enough to compare the standard of living of Iasi citizens before 2007 with that of today, the infrastructure of 17 years ago with the infrastructure of today, the freedom of today, the freedom of movement then with the freedom of movement now.
\nJoining the big family of European states has made us stronger than ever.
\nBut the European Union is not whole without Romania’s eastern neighbors, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
\nI warmly welcomed the official invitation of the two countries to start accession negotiations.
\nI believe that the time has come for both our Moldovan and Ukrainian brothers and sisters to join us in the European Union as soon as possible, and our meeting these days is a new opportunity to affirm the commitment of the community of Iasi.
\nWe will support this accession process with all our might, offering expertise in accessing European funds and total openness”, said Mayor Mihai Chirica.
\nThe events of the Twin Towns Forum will focus on grant funding opportunities, project submission timetables, eligible structures and partnerships, and examples of good practice and implementation of urban and rural development, social, school, health, sanitation and health infrastructure projects.
\n“It is a great honor to be here in Iasi for this very important event for the Republic of Moldova.
\nChisinau is a city with a very rich history.
\nHere in Romania alone, we have four cities with which we are twinned, and we have 18 active cooperation agreements in different projects.
\nOn January 24, 2008, when the twinning agreement with Iasi was signed, it was just a strengthening of the existing relations, and the other projects that have continued, and the exchange of experiences, but also the cultural exchanges that we have every year.
\nThese links are not just symbolic, but on concrete projects, especially in recent years when the partner cities and twin cities in Romania have helped us a lot.
\nWe have implemented, and are implementing, many projects together.
\n(…) Today we are also encouraged by the European funds and cross-border projects that we access together, whether we are talking about various projects for the rehabilitation of premises or health, education or cultural exchange.
\nEach step we take together with Romanian cities brings us closer and closer to the European standards to which we aspire”, said Deputy Mayor Olga Ursu in her speech at the event. The event was held at the Palace of Culture and focused on grant funding opportunities, project submission calendars, eligible structures and partnerships and examples of good practice and implementation of urban and rural development projects, school infrastructure, health, sanitation and social programs.
