TAROM receives its first Boeing 737 MAX 8

TAROM has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which touched down at Bucharest “Henri Coandă” International Airport on the evening of September 8, following a flight from Seattle. With this arrival, TAROM becomes the second Romanian airline to operate Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft, following Blue Air.

The aircraft was delivered by Boeing following a series of delays, departing from the manufacturer’s facility in Seattle and arriving at its destination at 18:50 local time. The journey included a technical refueling stop in Iceland; the Seattle–Keflavík leg took 8 hours and 6 minutes of flight time, while the Keflavík–Bucharest segment lasted 4 hours and 39 minutes. The aircraft bears registration YR-BGO, is named “Mircea Lucescu”, and features a single-class layout accommodating 186 passengers. Preparations are currently underway to introduce the aircraft into commercial service in the second half of September.

By the end of the month, the flag carrier is scheduled to receive a second aircraft of this type, registered YR-BGN and named “Ivan Patzaichin”. Both Boeing 737 MAX 8 units are leased from Ireland-based CDB Aviation, a subsidiary of the China Development Bank group. The new additions will complement TAROM’s fleet, which currently comprises six ATR 72 and four Boeing 737-800NG aircraft.
