The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, through the National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR), has launched an investment project valued at €146.41 million (VAT included) dedicated to the modernization of 13.4 kilometers of national road DN 73C and the construction of a new 2.39-kilometer link road to the Sibiu-Pitești Motorway (A1). Funded by non-reimbursable European funds via the Transport Programme 2021-2027 and the state budget, the project aims to absorb and streamline traffic flows around the Tigveni interchange, as works on the adjacent motorway section are nearing completion.
According to data reported by Digi 24, construction and assembly works account for €124.14 million of the total allocated budget. The execution duration is set at 14 months, phased over two years: €95.20 million is planned for the first year (including €76.16 million for construction and assembly), and €51.22 million for the second year (including €47.98 million for construction and assembly). The project entails widening the DN 73C road platform to 9 meters between km 55+000 and km 68+000, adding climbing lanes for slow vehicles on sections of 770 meters and 1.18 kilometers with steep gradients and heavy traffic exceeding 20%, as well as three roundabouts, 42 culverts, sidewalks, and six bus stops. The new link road to the A1 will feature a 19.5-meter platform with two lanes in each direction, bypassing Tigveni. Along the route, two overpasses will be built, alongside two new bridges over the Topolog River (410 meters and 170.5 meters long), two rehabilitated bridges on DN 73C, and one replaced bridge on DJ 678A (where 600 meters of road will also be rehabilitated). The required land area totals 302,037 square meters across the localities of Tigveni, Ciofrângeni (Argeș County), and Golești (Vâlcea County), with expropriations estimated at 210,760 square meters.
This investment complements Section 4 of the A1 motorway (Tigveni – Curtea de Argeș, 9.86 km), contracted to the Austrian builder PORR for a value of €319.48 million excluding VAT. Physical progress on this section is approaching 97%, with the Momaia tunnel (1,350 meters) virtually complete, meaning traffic could open ahead of schedule later this year, well before the contractual deadline of February 2027.
